If a UPI payment failed but money left your account, you are usually entitled to an automatic refund within one day for a person-to-person transfer and within five days for a merchant payment, under RBI’s rules on failed digital transactions. With Dhanteras on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November, many people are paying shops, delivery apps and relatives over UPI this week, so here is how to check what happened to a payment and get your money back.
Step 1: Check the transaction status in your UPI app
Open the app you paid with (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank’s app) and go to the transaction history. Tap the payment and look at the status. You will see one of three states.
- Successful: The money reached the other account. If the shop or person says they did not get it, ask them to check their own bank statement, not just SMS alerts.
- Pending: The banks have not confirmed the result yet. Most pending payments settle or reverse on their own, so do not pay again straight away.
- Failed: The payment did not go through. If your account was still debited, the amount should come back automatically.
On the same screen, note the 12-digit UPI reference number, also called the UTR or transaction ID. You will need it for any complaint. Take a screenshot of the full transaction page while you are there.
Step 2: Match it with your bank statement
The app status is not the final word. Open your bank’s app or net banking and look at the statement for the same date. A debit followed later by a credit marked with terms like “UPI-REV” or “UPI-RET” means the reversal has already happened.
If you see a debit and no reversal, keep the date in mind. The refund clock starts from the day of the transaction.
Step 3: Know the refund timeline
RBI’s circular on turnaround time (TAT) for failed transactions sets clear deadlines for UPI. Here T means the calendar date of the transaction.
| What happened | Auto-refund deadline | Compensation if late |
|---|---|---|
| You sent money to a person, your account was debited, but their account was not credited | T + 1 day | Rs 100 per day beyond T + 1 |
| You paid a merchant, your account was debited, but the shop did not get confirmation | T + 5 days | Rs 100 per day beyond T + 5 |
RBI says this compensation should be credited to your account on the bank’s own initiative, without you having to file a claim. In practice, raising a complaint creates a record and speeds things up.
Step 4: Raise a complaint inside the app
If the deadline has passed, open the transaction again and look for an option such as “Raise issue”, “Help” or “Report a problem”. According to NPCI, complaints should start in the app you used for the payment. Pick the issue type, for example “money debited but not received”, and add the UPI reference number if asked.
BHIM users can use UPI Help, an NPCI feature inside the BHIM app that lets you check pending transactions and complain about failed transfers or merchant payments.
The app must update the complaint status for you. Save the complaint number or a screenshot of the acknowledgement.
Step 5: Escalate if nothing moves
NPCI lists this order of escalation for UPI complaints:
- The UPI app you used (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and so on)
- The PSP bank behind that app
- Your own bank, the one whose account was debited
- NPCI, through its website or its toll-free number 1800-120-1740
When you contact your bank, share the UPI reference number, date, amount and the screenshot. Branch staff and customer care can raise a ticket on their side even if the app complaint is still open.
If your bank does not resolve the complaint within 30 days, or you are not happy with its reply, you can file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Attach your earlier complaint acknowledgement and the screenshots.
Wrong UPI ID or paid the wrong person
The refund rules above apply to failed transactions. If a payment was successful but went to the wrong UPI ID, the bank cannot reverse it on its own. Contact the person first if you know them, then raise a complaint in your app and with your bank. Recovery depends on the receiver’s bank and the receiver agreeing to return the money, so act on the same day.
Avoid fake “UPI refund” helplines
Festival weeks bring a spike in refund scams. Search results and social media posts often show fake “NPCI complaint” or “UPI customer care” numbers. Keep these rules in mind:
- You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN is only for sending money.
- Do not scan a QR code or accept a “collect request” from someone who says they are sending a refund.
- Do not install screen-sharing apps on a stranger’s advice.
- Use only the help section inside your UPI app, your bank’s official app or website, or NPCI’s official site.
If your phone is lost or stolen during the festival rush, block UPI through your bank immediately and then try to locate the device. Our guide on finding a lost Android phone with Google Find Hub explains the steps.
Quick checklist before you pay this Diwali
- Check the name that appears after you enter a UPI ID or scan a QR code before you enter your PIN.
- If a payment shows pending, wait before trying again, and ask the shop to confirm on their side.
- Keep screenshots of large payments until the money shows in the other account.
- Avoid paying on very weak mobile data inside crowded markets. Weak networks are a common reason payments get stuck.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a UPI refund take if the payment failed?
For a transfer to a person, the money should be reversed by the next day (T + 1). For a payment to a merchant, the limit is T + 5 days, where T is the transaction date.
Do I get compensation if my UPI refund is late?
Yes. Under RBI’s turnaround time rules, the bank must pay Rs 100 per day for each day of delay beyond the deadline, and it should credit this without waiting for a claim.
Where do I complain about a failed UPI transaction?
Start in the UPI app you used, through its help or raise issue option. If it is not resolved, escalate to the PSP bank, your own bank and then NPCI.
What should I do if a UPI payment is pending?
Wait before paying again. Most pending payments either complete or reverse on their own. Check your bank statement and raise a complaint if the deadline passes.
Can I get money back if I paid the wrong UPI ID?
A successful payment to the wrong person is not a failed transaction, so it is not auto-reversed. Contact the receiver if you know them and raise a complaint with your app and bank on the same day.
