The New Oppo Find N: First Foldable by the Chinese Giant

Oppo unveiled the Find N in its entirety yesterday, after teasing it last week. Let’s look at the all new Oppo Find N in detail.

On the second day of China’s Oppo Inno Day annual event, the Oppo Find N foldable smartphone was unveiled. The smartphone, according to Oppo, has a Flexion Hinge and folds flawlessly, leaving almost no space between the two sides of the folded display. According to Oppo, the handset will make its debut in China and will be available later this month. The phone comes a day after Oppo announced the Oppo Air Glass and MariSilicon X imaging NPU. The Oppo Find N will face off against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. In this post, we have covered information about the first foldable phone, Oppo Find N.

Pricing and Availability

The 8GB RAM + 256GB storage edition of the new Oppo Find N costs CNY 7,699 (approximately $1,200 USD), while the 12GB + 512GB storage variant costs CNY 8,999. (roughly $1,400 USD). The phone will be available for pre-order in China starting on Wednesday, December 15, and will be available for purchase on December 23. It will be available in three colors: black, purple, and white.

Display

With a huge, squarish folding OLED panel on the inside and a smaller screen on the exterior that can be used when the phone is closed, the Oppo Find N is comparable to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Unlike the Z Fold display, which is higher when unfolded, the 120Hz inner display is 7.1 inches diagonal and has a slightly landscape 9:8.4 aspect ratio

This means you don’t have to turn your phone 90 degrees (horizontal fold) to watch videos in their full size. Dual stereo speakers are also situated on the phone’s bottom, which enhances the experience of swiftly opening the phone to watch a video.

The display looks fantastic. Lau acknowledged that the panel is made by Samsung, but that Oppo has substantially altered it and owns the patents. UTG (ultra-thin glass) protects the screen, which Oppo rates at 200,000 folds, the same as Samsung.

Another advantage of this design is that the phone folds shut without a gap between the display sides. The crease can be felt beneath your finger, but it’s impossible to perceive in everyday use except from the most extreme viewing angles.

The outer screen is actually rather usable at 5.49 inches with a 2:1 aspect ratio — if it wasn’t for the folded device being twice as thick as a standard phone, it’d be the small Android flagship that no one else is manufacturing. Of course, the hinge causes a wider bezel on the left side of the screen, but it isn’t distracting.

Power

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC is combined with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage in the Oppo Find N. The phone has a 4500mAh battery with 33W SuperVOOC wired charging, which claims to charge the phone to 50% capacity in half an hour and fully charge it in 70 minutes. The smartphone also supports 15W AirVOOC wireless charging as well as 10W reverse wireless charging.

Cameras

In terms of cameras, the Oppo Find N has a total of five. A 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 main sensor is housed in a triple rear camera system shielded by a ceramic lens plate. A 16-megapixel sensor is linked with an ultrawide lens, while a 13-megapixel sensor is paired with a telephoto lens that provides 3x optical magnification. On the outer screen is a 32-megapixel front camera, while on the inside screen is another 32-megapixel camera.

Interface

The OPPO Find N is powered by Android 11 and ColorOS 12, a proprietary film software. We needed to test a smartphone with Chinese firmware, a slew of local apps, and no mention of Google services. The shell has a familiar layout when closed, with desktops, widgets, gesture or button navigation choices, some additional gestures, and a smart panel that can be called from the screen’s edge at a specific place. All icons and animations have been redesigned, of course. However, nothing out of the ordinary, especially if I’ve previously used an OPPO smartphone.
