Canon EOS Rebel T8i Review: Most Advanced in EOS Rebel Lineup

Here is the Canon EOS Rebel T8i Review which is considered great in the world of photography.

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i (also known as the EOS 850D outside of the US) is a beast when it comes to DSLR. The Canon EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D feels a few steps behind the greatest starting mirrorless cameras in terms of technology and features. The Nikon D5600 and Pentax K-70, two competitor DSLRs, are both four years old now.

Nonetheless, the Canon EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D is a powerful and comfortable entry-level DSLR. It’s bigger than some rival DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, but at 515g, it’s not bulky. The build quality isn’t great, but the button layout is thoughtful, and the LCD screen performs admirably.

There isn’t enough difference between this and its predecessor to justify the higher investment. When you compare the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D to today’s mirrorless cameras, it feels like the technology in the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D is stifled.

Let’s dive into the Full Canon EOS Rebel T8i Review-

Price

It costs $749.99 / £839.99 (about AU$1,580) for the body itself or $899.99 / £929.99 (approximately AU$1,730) for the 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM kit lens (28-88mm equivalent).

Other kits are available on the Canon website, and the camera was first announced in early 2020, so you might find cheaper bargains elsewhere if you browse around.

Design and Handling

The T8i is compact enough to fit comfortably in any hand, and the buttons were strategically positioned to allow one to make quick and easy adjustments without interrupting workflow.

When it comes to adjusting focus points, navigating menu settings, and evaluating photographs, the 3-inch LCD touch screen allows more visual control. Its multi-angle design (it can fold out to the side as well as up and down) makes low-angle images much easier than with Canon Mark 5D IV.

It’s also a small camera for a DSLR, weighing only 515g with the card and batteries installed. DSLR cameras aren’t all bulky. For this test, we used the normal 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, which is a lightweight combo.

The body is clearly made of plastic. Although this camera is more expensive than the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D, its build quality is comparable, and we wouldn’t want to drop the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D or expose it to inclement weather. The card door in particular feels fragile.

Image Quality

The image quality of the Canon EOS Rebel T8i / 850D is unsurprising given that it has the same sensor and CPU as the Canon EOS M50. This camera is capable of taking sharp, vivid photographs in high contrast light. It’s exciting to see 4K footage, and the higher resolution produces a cleaner image than Full HD. Unfortunately, because of the crop factor, obtaining a wide-angle view is difficult, but you do get a more telephoto image, which may fit your chosen movie style.

Color vibrancy is a personal preference, but we like Canon’s default color setting. JPEG photos have excellent color rendering, but if you want a more colorful, saturated effect, you may want to switch to the appropriate Picture Style. Image quality is also excellent in low light, with the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D capable of producing clear shots up to ISO 6400. Fine-grain appears at ISO 1600, but only when viewing photographs at 100%, and it’s entirely acceptable, but noise’s negative influence is mostly visible as color desaturation at ISO 3200 and higher.

Connectivity and Battery

For smartphone connectivity, the Rebel has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It’s compatible with the Canon camera connect app, which is available for Android and iOS devices for free. You may copy photographs from the T8i to your phone (for on-the-go sharing) or use your phone as a remote control, complete with a live view from the lens, when you’re connected.

Micro USB and small HDMI connectors, a UHS-I SDXC memory card slot, a 3.5mm microphone input, and a 2.5mm connection for a wired remote control are all included on the camera. It can be used as a webcam on Windows computers, but it is not currently supported on Macs.

The EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D has a good 800-shot battery life while utilizing the optical viewfinder, despite its small 1,040mAh battery. In comparison to mirrorless cameras, this is a distinct advantage. Switching to live view mode, however, reduces the battery life to 310 shots. If you primarily utilize the optical viewfinder, the battery will easily last you a full day of photography.

To keep the LP-E17 charged, it comes with a power charger, which you should keep in your camera bag. Unlike other modern mirrorless cameras, the T8i does not have a USB port for charging the battery in-camera.

Verdict

Although mirrorless cameras now outnumber DSLRs in terms of new models, DSLRs like the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D still have some advantages in terms of battery life (in viewfinder mode) and handling. It is still a possibility if they are essential to you. Though it’s worth noting that this camera performs better in live view mode, its other features feel a little unnecessary.

The Dual Pixel phase-detection AF system is probably one of the best features of the EOS Rebel T8i / EOS 850D. It’s quick, dependable, and excellent for both photos and video. When shooting a 4K video, keep in mind that only the weaker contrast-detection AF is available.
